(1) I bought these to replace a couple of down pillows I had that were getting old and rather shabby.
These have the same *feeling* as down, but are heavier (weight). They plump up very nicely, and provide the same support as a medium-firm down pillow. If you have allergies, these are ideal.
I’m really sold on them — in fact, I’m getting ready to order 4 more. I just wish they came in Queen size.
(2) There seems to be a lot of hubbub about what is meant by “gel” in the product description. I guess if you’re expecting something gooey and liquid, you will be disappointed. I haven’t opened them up to see what the filling actually is, but I imagine the “gel” is finer and much less abrasive than the polyester you’d find in a typical cheap pillow. I’ve had mine for a couple of years now, and they are just as fluffy and uniform as the day I got them: no lumps or flattening. These pillows are very soft and comfortable. If you like hard pillows, look elsewhere (buckwheat pillows are awesome for that, I think). If you like luxuriously soft pillows, I can’t imagine getting two better pillows for under $30.
