(2)These containers are a part of my kitchen remodel. I was originally looking at the lazy susan type of recycling center but happen to notice this in my browsing. Since I am making my own cabinets size didn’t matter but these bins will fit into a 15 inch wide opening. I believe the minimum opening height is 19 inches. I use the first bin for trash and the second for my non-paper recyclables. The bins are a little smaller than the normal floor-type kichen garbage can but similar in size to ones that one would put be able to put into the sink cabinet (just a little taller but not as wide).
The wood flange is made out of 3/4 inch birch plywood attached to the drawer slides. The cabinet face is attached to the slides by metal brackets – my initial impression of these brackets and how they attached to the wood cabinet face was that they would be weak but I have not had any problems. The only problem I did have was that two 1/4 inch #10 machine screws were missing for the kit. These screws are what hold the drawer slide brackets to the wood face brackets – these two brackets easily connect via a key hole type of connection, similar to hanging a newer clock on a wall. Once the screws are in the key holes then they need to be tightened down. The brackets on the wood cabinet face only allow for a 1/4 inch space from the brackets to the wood. I was only able to find 3/8 inch #10 machine screws at the local hardware store. Trying to cut these down to 1/4 inch length would not be worth the hassle so I just marked the spots on the wood cabinet face and drilled 1/4 inch deep holes so the screws could tighten all the way down.
One thing I will say to purchase with this is the kick plate opener kit. One only needs to tap the mechanism on the bottom of the cabinet door with your toe to have the containers slide out a you automatically to dump your trash. My wife especially likes this feature when she is cooking and her hands are hands are full with the item she wants to throw out. The mechanism is a bit pricey (approx. $40) for a large magnet, spring, a metal plate, and a plastic release mechanism but once it is in place you will be glad you spent the extra dollars.
In summary, it is a great item, I wish it had a little larger bins but then they wouldn’t fit into standard cabinet sizes. It is a very durable item despite my intial doubts regarding the cabinet door attachment. The kick plate opener is a definite plus just a little pricey. Since I have moved the trash can into the cabinet I now realize that the typical floor style trash can is a little bit of an eye sore.
